The Nvidia-OpenAI Romance Is Over

Greg Guenthner:

Nvidia CEO Huang Says $30 Billion OpenAI Investment ‘Might Be the Last’

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the company’s recent $30 billion investment in OpenAI “might be the last time” it invests in the artificial intelligence startup before it could go public toward the end of the year.

Huang said the opportunity to invest $100 billion in OpenAI, which was the figure that the two companies touted as part of a massive infrastructure deal in September, is probably “not in the cards.”

“The reason for that is because they’re going to go public,” Huang said during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference on Wednesday.

He also mentioned that Nvidia’s $10 billion investment in OpenAI rival Anthropic would likely be its last. Nvidia previously shared its plans to invest in Anthropic in an announcement alongside Microsoft in November.

Huang’s comments come after months of speculation about the scope of Nvidia’s relationship with OpenAI. The chipmaker disclosed in a quarterly filing in November that the previously announced $100 billion deal may not come to fruition, and the Wall Street Journal reported in January that the agreement was “on ice.”

Meta Sued Over AI Smart Glasses’ Privacy Concerns, After Workers Reviewed Nudity, Sex, and Other Footage

Meta is facing a new lawsuit over its AI smart glasses and their lack of privacy, after an investigation by Swedish newspapers found that workers at a Kenya-based subcontractor are reviewing footage from customers’ glasses, which included sensitive content, like nudity, people having sex, and using the toilet.

Meta claimed it was blurring faces in images, but sources disputed that this blurring consistently worked, reports noted. The news prompted the U.K. regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office, to investigate the matter.

Now, the tech giant is facing a lawsuit in the U.S. The complaint alleges that the Meta AI smart glasses are advertised using promises like “designed for privacy, controlled by you,” and “built for your privacy,” which might not lead customers to assume their glasses’ footage, including intimate moments, was being watched by overseas workers. The plaintiffs believed Meta’s marketing and said they saw no disclaimer or information that contradicted the advertised privacy protections.

The suit charges Meta and its glasses manufacturing partner Luxottica of America with conduct that violates consumer protection laws. Meta does not have a comment on the litigation at this time.

Scientists Discover Plant Compound That Forces Aggressive Breast Cancer Cells Into Self-Destruction

Scientists looking for new ways to tackle hard-to-treat breast cancers have turned to an unexpected source: Munronia henryi, a plant known for producing limonoids, a family of complex natural compounds that plants often use for chemical defense.

In the research journal Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B, the team reports isolating two previously unknown prieurianin-type limonoids from this species. One stood out immediately. They named it DHL-11, and it showed strong activity against triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), the subtype linked to the worst outcomes and fewest targeted treatment options.

In cell tests, DHL-11 hit several cancer hallmarks at once. It slowed TNBC cell growth, reduced their ability to migrate, and pushed cells into G2/M arrest before triggering apoptosis. At the same time, treated cells accumulated more reactive oxygen species and showed increased DNA damage, a combination that can overwhelm a tumor cell’s ability to survive and repair itself.

The study positions DHL-11 as a promising new kind of targeted therapy candidate.
